Differences between BLDC and brushed DC motors

Brushless DC (BLDC) motors and brushed DC motors are two common members of the DC motor family, with fundamental differences in construction and operation.

Brushed motors rely on brushes to guide the current, much like a band conductor directing the flow of music with gestures. However, over time, these brushes wear out like the needle of a vinyl record, requiring regular replacement to keep the motor in good health.

Brushless motors operate like a self-playing instrument, precisely controlling the current through an electronic controller without any physical contact, thus reducing wear and extending the motor's lifespan.

In terms of maintenance, brushed motors are like vintage cars that require regular upkeep, while brushless motors are akin to modern electric vehicles that almost eliminate the need for maintenance. Efficiency-wise, brushed motors are like traditional fuel engines, while brushless motors resemble high-efficiency electric engines.

Regarding efficiency, brushed motors are less efficient due to the impact of brush friction and current loss. Brushless motors are generally more efficient as they minimize energy loss.

In terms of control and electronic complexity, the control of brushed motors is simpler since the direction of current is determined by the brushes' position. Brushless motors require more complex electronic controllers to adjust the current in real-time and ensure the rotor is in the optimal working position.

In application scenarios, both brushed and brushless motors are capable of meeting the requirements for high performance, high efficiency, and long lifespan, and are widely used in automotive electronics, smart medical devices, industrial automation, robot drives, smart home appliances, and special equipment.
